SCHOLARSHIP |
You must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 90% . Should your GPA drop below 90% at the end of a marking period, you will be issued a letter of probation. Should you fail to improve within two marking periods, a letter of dismissal will be sent. At this time, the member has a right to a hearing before the NHS Advisor, who will then meet with the NHS Faculty Council. If a hearing is not requested, the student will be dismissed from NHS.
SERVICE |
The National Honor Society is a service organization in which members support the community by participating in 30 hours of community service each year. This period extends from the first day of summer vacation in a given year, to the last day of school in the following year. All service must be documented on the SHS Community Service Verification Form.
- 8-10 hours must be completed during the summer. If more hours are completed during the summer, only 10 can be counted toward the total 30. Documentation of this service is due at our first meeting of the school year.
- The remaining 20-22 hours must be completed during the school year (about 2 hours per month from September to June), and community service logs must be submitted to the NHS Advisor on the last day of each marking period, and the last day of school.
- Only 10 of the 30 hours can be related to band activities (pep band, summer community band performances). Only 10 of your 30 hours can be related to events such as Parent’s Night, Open House, and Orientation
- All service must be signed by the supervisor of your service in order to be counted. If you are having difficulty obtaining a signature, please see me. Under no circumstance can this person be a parent, guardian or other relative.
LEADERSHIP & CHARACTER |
National Honor Society members serve as role models by demonstrating high standards of character and leadership. Failure to maintain high standards of character and leadership may result in probation or dismissal.
- Actions that will result in consideration for probation include but are not limited to: disrespect toward faculty/staff, skipping class, leaving classes with frequency, excessive tardies to class and/or school, missing NHS deadlines, or poor conduct on social media.
- Actions that can lead to consideration of dismissal include but are not limited to: cheating/plagiarism, illegal activity in or out of school, threats to others, or violations of school rules.
- Each member must attend mandatory NHS Meeting. Members are permitted to miss two meetings. A 3rd absence will result in dismissal. Meeting are held at 7:00 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month when school is in session.
- Each member must attend the Induction Ceremony unless prior approval has been granted by the advisor. Failure to do so will result in probation or dismissal.
OFFICER RESPONSIBILITIES
PRESIDENT |
- Must be a senior
- Plan and chair all meetings
- Work with advisor to organize all events
- Be master of ceremonies at annual Induction Ceremony
- Responsible for the performance of officers or committees
- Responsible for year long community service project
VICE-PRESIDENT |
- May be a junior or senior
- Plan and chair all meetings in the absence of the president
- Help plan and coordinate all activities
- Responsible for collection and validation of individual community service forms
- Responsible for major community service project in the first two marking terms
SECRETARY |
- May be a junior or senior
- Take attendance at all meetings
- Maintain a database of membership (include attendance, participation in events, etc.)
- Take the minutes at the meetings
- Type up the minutes and submit them to the president and advisor for validation
- Type up agenda in coordination with the president and advisor
- Responsible for collection of money (if applicable) and keeping accurate books with the president and advisor
- Responsible for major community service projects in the last two marking terms
MEDIA SPECIALIST |
- May be a junior or senior
- Responsible for the Sutton High School NHS Web Page
- Focus on the communication of the chapter with the rest of the community via flyers, social media, and pictures
2019-2020 NHS CONTRACT
Congratulations on your selection to the Sutton High School National Honor Society. It is important that you agree to the expectations to be considered a member in good standing as set forth by the Sutton High School Chapter of the National Honor Society’s by-laws. You are expected to maintain high standards of scholarship, character, leadership and service required for your selection. Failure to do so may result in a probationary period, or in dismissal.

Any member who is not keeping up with the approximate rate of 2 hours per month will be issued a letter of probation. Should you fail to improve within one marking period, a letter of dismissal will be sent. At this time, the student has a right to a hearing before the NHS Advisor, who will then meet with the NHS Faculty Council. If a hearing is not requested, the student will be dismissed from NHS.

2) Members can only be on probation once during the duration of their membership.
3) The member must schedule a hearing with the advisor and a parent or guardian. The member must design a plan of action to remedy the violation and present it at the hearing.
4) A time of up to 9 weeks (a marking period) will be given to achieve compliance.
5) If compliance is not achieved within 9 weeks, dismissal is automatic.
6) Seniors on probation at the end of the 3rd or 4th quarter will not be allowed to receive the NHS stole for graduation.
Dismissal:
1) The member will be notified of their dismissal by a letter, documenting the reason. A hearing will be held in the case of a dismissal, even if there was no prior warning or probation period. A hearing is a right of membership and the member is allowed the opportunity to respond in writing or orally.
2) The member will not receive NHS honors at graduation.
3) Colleges and universities to which the student applied may be notified.

- NHS members must attend EVERY meeting ON TIME. All meetings take place the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 a.m.
- Students who are late twice in a row will receive a verbal warning
- The following tardy will result in a formal written probation letter - see probation for details
- If a student misses a meeting completely without an excused reason they will be on probation . And if a student misses two meetings they will automatically be excused from NHS.
- Each member must attend the Induction Ceremony unless prior approval has been granted by the advisor. Failure to do so will result in probation or dismissal.
